Extra Blog December

This month I have been spending lots of time watching my hockey coach. I am a goalie, and the goalies have to split the games. since I don't play every game, I watch what my coach is doing, while on the bench. I have analyzed his pros and cons. it is very helpful to see what causes our team to win and lose, and to see the quick decisions that are constantly being made. I have learned a lot from just sitting and analyzing what the coach does. I have 3 coaches, and each one has a different style. some are more successful then others. their coaching methods are also very different.

Lesson 1 Reflection

1. I think I am most proud of the way I easily met time. After being at the school for 3 years, doing a 10 minute presentation was very easy

2. I feel I deserve a P. I feel I spoke well, and did all the basic requirements. For example when reading the rubric after presenting, I feel I met all the P requirements. I was prepared, met time, was informative, and was interactive.

3. I feel that talking about hockey was what really worked for me. Coaching is a difficult thing to talk about. It is very hard to make sure you are fluently explaining how coaching works, so the rest can get it.

4. If I had a time machine, I would make sure I sighted better sources. I didn't put the video interviews, even though I talked about them.

Interview 2

1. What is your background as a coach?
I started coaching in 1990 approximately. 25years ago. I have coached from age 6 thru 18. All levels from beginner to college & juniors. Many state championships, National championships, to International Peewee Championships.
2. How many teams have you coached? From each team, tell me an important experience that helped you become a better coach.
Well I have Coached over 40 teams over the years. Summer, and spring teams, High School JV &Varsity, Mites thru Midgets different levels. Getting to know my players, this is very important to me. Having a good feel for a player, their family, what they like to do, why they play, build a relationship with them. If I know what motivates a player and give them the respect they deserve they will do the same for me.
3. Can you ever truly master coaching? If not, how do you get to the best of your ability? Master coaching?
You have to decide what the ultimate goal is, winning? Building a relationship? Developing? Coaching to me what it says- you coach, mentor, teach, to provide a player with an experience so they can do the same for someone else. If you can show how much fun and passionate the experience is then all will want to do it.
4. I've heard many people say that coaching is an art. I am wondering how do you see coaching.

God has given me the ability to lead and coach. I utilize those talents and gifts to the best of my ability. I coach with expectations, but also with love. It is very important to put your arm around a player, during good and bad times. Also to gain the respect you have to give it.
5. What are your qualifications as a coach.
Played for 20 years, 25 years of experience, taken many classes and read books. Attended seminars, watch countless hours of video. Most important, I have faith in The Lord that he will be with all the time, which makes me qualified for any situation.

Blog 8 - Research and Working EQ

1. What is the best possible way to raise kids to perform to the best of their ability, while have fun in  hockey?
  • Kids need to be trained at a young age, while incorporating fun into the learning experience.
3. The USA hockey manual has been a big help in the learning process department. I have all the manuals, and plan to continue using them for my research checks.

4. N/A I have not found a mentor yet, and have not started mentorship. I plan to start volunteering at my hockey rink, to get a hands on experience with the kids.

Blog 7: Independent Component 1 Approval

1. I plan to help coach a youth hockey team, and be a goalie coach. I plan to train a goalie, and then track his G.A.A., or goals against average, to see if he has improved or not. My coaching skill will be the ones I developed so far. I would not have a mentor guiding me, telling me what to do. It would be my own thing.

2. I plan to get logs signed from the rink, take pictures, and record games and progress.

3. My topic already has a lot of depth to it, but this will give me a chance to see just how coaching is. I can see where I might need improvement, and also if it is meant for me.

Extra September Blog

For the month of September, I have cracked down to look for a mentor. sadly without any luck. I have contacted a few rinks and asked them if they know anyone that is willing to take in a kid all year as an apprentice. When you think about it that is a lot to ask of someone. 3 rinks have said they don't know of anyone that can. I am going to take a different approach, and see how that goes.

Blog 5 - Mentorship Reflection

1. I have not found a mentor yet, but I am looking to see if one of my past hockey coaches can do it. It is hard to find a coach that is in the area, and would be willing to take a kid to teach how to coach while coaching. I will find one soon though.... Hopefully.

2. I think the most important article I have read so far, was the article in my Legends book. It talked about how a lot of hockey's legends weren't always that great, but they had coaches that believed in them, and helped them improve on their skills. They kept working hard and practiced, and soon enough, they made it into the big leagues. The NHL. Not only did they make it, they became legends.

Extra Blog

Books and Other News.

For my senior topic, I have chosen to do Hockey Coaching. I have not found an official mentor yet, but my dad is a level 4 out of 5 hockey coach. I could use my dad if I wanted to, because it is really hard to get a level 4 coaching card. the only difference between 4 and 5, is that 5 can coach college level. I have already learned so much about coaching and the responsibility. My dad have given me a bunch of coaching books, and I have read through one of them. It was full of great knowledge. The biggest thing that stood out to me, is that just because you can play the game, doesn't mean you could coach it. That really stood out to me, because I have seen a ton of great players that then go onto coaching, an are just bad. The coach is such a big factor in team performance. I played for a team one season, and we won probably two games. The next season we had the same exact team, with just a different coach, and we almost made it to the championships. Coaching a team is no easy task, and these books are filled with tips, tricks, and personal experiences. My goal by the end of this project is to get my coaching card, and have my own team. Some people just can't coach, so I hope to determine if this is a good fit for me.

2. Gary Suzuki. Number (626) 252- 2115

3. My Mentor covered most of the Questions I had. I asked about things like "What is a blanket?"
"How is sales?" "Do you enjoy your job?" These are some general questions that were raised during my volunteer hours.

4. I think the most Important thing I gained during this experience was the knowledge of my mentors job. It was a interesting process that he goes through, and to see it in action was very cool. Selling a product is a very amazing thing to watch. There are so many factors that go into making a good salesmen. It is incredible how risky it is, if you work of commission.

5. I am not sure exactly what my topic is going to be. I know what I did is not what I want to do. it seemed like a fun job, but it's not what I am looking for. I enjoy sales, and might get a job there, but not selling this. My mentor told me with everything being digital now, the industry is going to die out in 20 to 30 years. That is not the kind of job for me.

Blog 1.

Blog 1

1. What presentations did you see?
Karate
Soccer Training
Goalkeeping
Film Production
Military Leadership
Graphic Design
Acting
Physical Therapy
Theater Tech
Magic the Gathering
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Advertising
Firefighting
Business Management
Lending

2. What questions do you have that haven't been answered about the senior project?

I was wondering how long are the actual "2 hour" presentations? The run time for all the ones I saw seemed like only an hour. One senior told me you have 30 minutes of talk time, and then 30 minutes of activity time, but the activities didn't seem that long.

Why are most of the senior projects individual, when all we've been doing is group projects?

If you cannot find a mentor in the field you want to go in, are you not aloud to do that topic?

3. What is the most important part of the senior project, based on what you saw in the two hour presentations?

The most important part of the senior presentation is probably the talk time. It looks like you need to know your info, if you want to meet the time, and if you want to make it entertaining. I noticed you need and essential question, you need to define specific parts of the question, have three answers to your question, and then pick your best answer.

4. What topic are you considering doing and why?

I really want to do Exotic Dancing or Stripping. I'm pretty sure the teachers aren't going to take me seriously, but it is something I really want to do. It is a serious career that society turns into something bad. I was just talking to a friend about it, and they told me not to do it, I said I want to, and then they said good luck having Aids, or HIV. That was shocking. Society told this person that it is some unholy career, and is like prostitution. At the end of the day it is just a job. I think it would be fun to do, because I am a pretty confident person, and I think it would be easy for me. I am also a terrible dancer, and kind of afraid of doing it. So by facing my fears head on I think I can get lessons, become better, and make a career out of my, once, fear.

5. What are you doing for your summer mentorship?

I have not thought that far ahead, but I mentioned my career to my mom, and she said that one of my sister's friends has a brother in the career. I could possibly mentor with him, but we haven't talked to him yet.
